Pallet Town

First of all, go to your PC and get the Potion stored there. Next go downstairs and talk to your mother. Then, go outside and go to your rival(I will call him Gary)'s house. After that, head for the tall greass. Professor Oak will stop you, saying it's dangerous. Follow him to his lab. He will let you pick either a Squirtle, a Bulbasaur, or a Charmander. If you're a beginner, choose Bulbasaur, which will fare better against your early foes. Then, Gary will pick whichever Pokmon is good against yours. If you pick Bulbasaur, he'll take Charmander. If you take Squirtle, he'll take Bulbasaur, and if you take Charmander, he'll take Squirtle. As you leave the lab, Gary will challenge you to a fight. You have no choice, and it doesn't matter what happens, so feel free to experiment with your new Pokmon. After the fight, make your way to Viridian City, and try to get your new Pokmon some EXP. If you have Bulbasaur, build it to Lv.7 so it can learn Leech Seed. If you have Charmander (my personal favorite) build it to Lv.9 so it can learn Ember. If you have Squirtle, build it to Lv.8 so it can learn Bubble (not all that threatening, is it?)

Viridian City

Once you get to Viridian City, head for the Pokcenter if your Pokmon is hurt. If not, go to the Pokmart, where the clerk will ask you to take a package to Prof. Oak You really have no choice, since the game won't continue until you do, so go back to Pallet and give him his package. In exchange, he will give you and Gary each a Pokdex. (I still can't fighure out why Gary gets one) which automatically records data for Pokmon that you see and/or capture. It's an extremely useful device. After you get your Pokdex, go to Gary's house, where his sister will give you a Town Map. Once you get that, head back for Viridian city.

Head for the Pokmart and get some Pokballs. Next, head down to the path betweeen Pallet and Viridian to catch the following Pokmon:

RattataMANYMANY
PidgeyMANYMANY
Note:The color of the text shows which version the Pokmon can be found in. This table shows that there are many Pidgey and Rattata in both versions of the game.

Viridian Forest

The Forest is the first place where you can fight other trainers. It's also the only place early on where having a Charmander is an advantage. This is because all of the Pokmon in the forest are bugs, which fire is good against. Speaking of which, these are the Pkmn(Pokmon) which can be found in this area.

WeedleMANYFEW
KakunaMANYFEW
CaterpieFEWMANY
MetapodFEWMANY
PikachuFEWFEW

When fighting another trainer (in this area, they're all Bug Catchers) there are certain rules.

This area shouldn't give you much trouble. Just remember to look for items lying around. In this area, there are a Pokball, a Potion(restores 30HP) & an Antidote(cures poisoning).

Pewter City

As soon as you get into Pewter City, your first instinct will probably be to challenge the Gym leader. Hold that thought until you have all of your pkmn up to at least Lv.10. This may take some time, but it will make the Gym battle easier.

After building levels, head to the Pokmart to stock up on Potions. (Don't buy Pokballs until you've beaten the Gym leader.) Then, head for the Gym. This is what's in store:

Gym Leader:Brock

First Pkmn:Geodude;Lv.12 Type:Rock/Ground
Second Pkmn:Onix;Lv.14 Type:Rock/Ground

Prizes

Boulderbadge
TM34

The Boulderbadge raises all of your pkmn's power a little and TM34 teaches Bide. Your best bet against Brock is a Water or Grass pkmn, such as Squirtle or Bulbasaur. Normal types like Pidgey or Rattata, or Fire types like Charmander will do poorly.

Mt.Moon

It's a good thing that there's a Pokcenter just outside of Mt.Moon, 'cause your pkmn are gonna have to be at full power to get through this area, especially if you have Charmander! If you have a Bulbasuar, train it until it learns Vine Whip(Lv.13), and if you have Squirtle, train it until it learns Water Gun(Lv.15). These moves will be extremely helpful inside. Once you get inside, you'll almost immediately run into a trainer. This place is full of 'em and most of them have rock pkmn, like Geodude. Speaking of rock pkmn, these are the pkmn which can be found here:

ZubatMANYMANY
GeodudeFEWFEW
ParasFEWFEW
ClefairyFEWFEW

These are the items which can be found here:

The most important ones to get are the Moon Stone, which can evolve certain pkmn. (I reccomend using it on Clefairy),the 2 TM's (especially if you don't have any water powers), and the Rare Candy, which makes a pkmn gain a level immediately. At the end of Mt.Moon, there is a trainer guarding two fossils. When you beat him, he'll let you take one of the fossils. The one on the right (much later in the game, mind you)will become Omanyte, a water/rock pkmn. The one on the left will become Kabuto (also a Water/Rock pkmn). Both are about equal in most respects, so just pick whichever one you want.

Cerulean City

If you haven't noticed already, your stuck in this city for now. Don't worry, though, there's plenty for your pkmn to do here. First of all, you should head to the Pokmart and Pokcenter (for obvious reasons). Then, when you're ready, head for the bridge at the top part of the town. Gary will stop you and issue a challenge, you have no choice, but it's not too hard to whoop him good. His team will probably consist of a Pidgeotto, an Abra, the pkmn he started with and three others. Once you defeat him, heal up your pkmn and go back up the bridge. There are 5 trainers waiting for you, when you beat them, you will get a Nugget. Sell it at the Pokmart for a whopping $5000! After you pass the bridge, you will come to Routes 24&25 which lead to the Sea Cottage, and have these pkmn on them:

WeedleMANYFEW
KakunaMANYFEW
PidgeyFEWFEW
OddishFEWNONE
AbraFEWFEW
MetapodFEWMANY
CaterpieFEWMANY
BellsproutNONEMANY

You can also find the following items:

When you get to the Sea Cottage, help Bill out. He'll give you info on four rare pkmn; Eevee, Vaporeon, Flareon and Jolteon. He'll also give you a ticket to the cruise ship S.S. Anne. Head back to Cerulean City and challenge the Gym Leader.

Gym Leader:Misty

First pkmn:Staryu;Lv.18 Type:Water
Second pkmn:Starmie;Lv.21 Type:Water

Prizes

Cascadebadge
TM11

You best shots against Misty are a grass pkmn like Ivysaur or Bellsprout, or an electric one, like Pikachu.

The Cascadebadge makes all pkmn up to Lv.30 obey you without question, while TM11 teaches Bubblebeam, a very good water attack. If you have Squirtle (probably Wartortle by now) give it to him.
After you beat Misty, the cop in front of the one house moves away, and you can go out the back door, and out of the city. (Go out the back door, turn right and continue down) On your way out, don't forget to pick up TM28 (Dig) from the house behind the Gym. Dig can be used to escape from caves when you don't have an escape rope. Just go to your pkmn list, and choose the one who has Dig. Now, choose DIG from its list of commands, and VOILA! you're out of the cave. The only problem is that it puts you at the entrance to the cave, not the exit, but oh well, can't have everything :) Also, don't forget to stop off at the Pkmn Day Care Center. The guy there will raise one of your pkmn for you at a price of $100 for every level gained. No too shabby, eh?

Vermillion City

When you reach Vermillion City the first time, you won't be able to go to the Gym (awwww...) because there's a bush blocking the way. Don't worry, you'll be able to get rid of those soon (Yay!). First, head to the house behind the Gym. There, you'll find the Pokmon Fan Club. If you listen to the president for a while, he'll give you a Bike Voucher, which can be used in Viridian City to get a bike for free. Sweet! After that, go next door, and take the kid there up on his offer to trade a Spearow for his Farfetch'd. This is the only place you can get a Farfetch'd, so get it now. Then, you should head for the house next to the Pokcenter and get the Old Rod from the man there. The Old Rod can be used to fish for marine pkmn. Next, stock up on supplies at the Pokmart and head down the docks for the S.S.Anne.

Feel free to explore the S.S.Anne at your leisure, but beware of trainers in most of the rooms. If you head upstairs, you'll run into Gary, who'll challenge you again. His team will probably consist of a Pidgeotto/Pidgeot (I'm not sure) a Kadabra, and the pkmn he started with. After whooping Gary again, head upstairs and talk to the Captain. If you help him get over his seasickness, he'll hand over HM01 (CUT). You can use CUT to chop down those annoying roadside bushes. Do you remeber how to use DIG? Well, you can use the same process to use CUT. Anyway, now that you have CUT, you can challenge the Gym leader, but first, be sure to pick up these itmes on the ship.

Now, you can challenge the Gym Leader. Here's what's in store:

Gym Leader:Lt.Surge

First pkmn:Voltorb;Lv.21 Type:Electric
Second pkmn:Pikachu;Lv.18 Type:Electric
Third pkmn:Raichu;Lv.24 Type:Electric

Prizes

Thunderbadge
TM 24

Your best chance against Lt.Surge is to use DIG against all of his pkmn. They're all weak against it, and it'll end the fight very quickly. The Thunderbadge raises the Special powers of all of your pkmn by a little and TM24 teaches Thunderbolt, an excellent move for Pikachu, or, if you caught one, a Nidorino/Nidorina.

Next, you should head east (to the left). There you will find a field full of trainers and the following pkmn.

EkansMANYNONE
SpearowMANYMANY
SandshrewNONEMANY
DrowzeeFEWFEW

Make sure you catch a Drowzee. It's a great addition to any team. Next, head for Diglett's Cave, which is (of course) full of Digletts. There are also a few Dugtrios. Once you get through the cave, you'll end up on Route 2 where you can pick up these items:

Teach Flash to a pkmn and head back to Cerulean City, where you can now CUT down the bush blocking the east exit from the town. This will lead you (eventually...) to Rock Tunnel.

Rock Tunnel

As soon as you get into Rock Tunnel, the first thing you'll notice (unless you're blind) is that it's pitch black. Light up your life with a FLASH, then head down and left to the ladder. On your way through the tunnel, pick up these pkmn:

Sorry, no items in the tunnel. Once you get out, you'll face a few more trainers and then, you'll be in Lavender Town.
